For Americans today is just Friday. The end of their work week. For people in Santa Fe, Texas today is a day that they will never forget. In a situation that has become too common in America ten people were killed today at a school in the southeastern Texas city of Santa Fe. It started off as an end of the year school day like any other end of the year school day for these students. That normal day did not last very long. Shortly after 7:30 they found themselves in the middle of a nightmare as gunfire erupted. Later on after the situation was contained explosives were found on and off school grounds.
In an earlier article that I had written we did not have a name of the person responsible for bringing the nightmare of so many into a reality. Dimitrios Pagourtzis was arrested in connection to todays school shooting. While at the present moment law enforcement believes that he may have been the only shooter, it is also believed that he may have had an 18 year old student as an accomplice.
Among the many that were injured in todays events are two law enforcement officers. Chief nursing officer for University of Texas Medical Branch hospital, David Marshall informed CNN that one man is critical condition with a gunshot wound to his arm.
A statistic that those who are against the second amendment and wish for stricter gun laws is the fact that this is the 22nd school shooting since January 1 and the third one in the last eight days.
The sequence of todays events are not immediately known, but witnesses heard an alarm and saw students running from the school as the sound of gunshots interrupted their morning.
Santa Fe Independent School District police chief Walter Braun let it be known that authorities found explosive devices in the school and immediate surrounding areas. It is not known yet whether any of those devices exploded. He strongly advises people not to touch anything that looks out of place since the devices were found. Instead it is his hope that they will call 911 and allow law enforcement to handle anything that looks out of place.
Investigators found a trailor where they believe that the explosive devices may have been put together and have started their investigation of the location.
All students and faculty were successfully removed from the school grounds and taken to another location where they could be reunited with their loved ones and family.
One witness told local CNN affiliate KTRK that she saw the suspect walk into an art classroom and start opening fire with a weapon that they described as a shotgun. They saw the 17 year old girl that I mentioned in my previous article shot in the leg. As of right now there are twelve people who are receiving treatment for injuries spread out over three hospitals in the surrounding area. They were unable to clarify whether they heard the alarm before or after the gunshots were fired.
A 14 year old student named Angelica Martinez gave the rest of America an inside look at todays events as she told CNN, “We were all standing outside, but not even five minutes later, we started hearing gunshots. And then everybody starts running, but, like, the teachers are telling us to stay put, but we’re all just running away. I didn’t see anybody shooting, but like (the gunshots) were kind of spaced.” All together it is believed that she heard four gun shots.
CNN affiliate KPRC was told by high school student Dakota Shrader that she had heard the gunshots fired. fire alarm go off after she had already head the fire alarm. She gave CNN and the rest of America some insight into the shooting from an inside perspective when she said, “I was in the history hallway, and as soon as we heard the alarms, everybody just started leaving following the same procedure as … (a) practice fire drill, and next thing you know, we just hear … three gunshots, loud explosions, and all the teachers are telling us to run.”
16 year old Makenna Evans was in Geometry class when she found herself in the middle of todays nightmare. As soon as she and other students got outside they were told by the school Principal to run.
At the time of this writing Governor Abbot and U.S. Senator Ted Cruz of Texas are on their way to Santa Fe. On the word of the Governor of Texas the American flag will be flown at half mass until sunset on Tuesday in honor of those that were lost in todays tragic events.
On behalf of myself and my professional family here at Halsey news, our hearts and prayers go out to those who survived todays nightmare and those families who lost loved ones.
