Approximately two dozen NFL players jumped on the #TakeTheKnee bandwagon during the playing of the national anthem prior to the start of the Ravens/Jaguars game on Sunday afternoon. Among those who chose to do this in response to Donald Trump’s tweets late Saturday morning, were Baltimore Ravens linebacker Terrell Suggs and Jacksonville Jaguars running back Leonard Fournette. Several other players also took part, including singer Rico Lavelle, who sunk down onto one knee and raised his right fist into the air as he sang the last line of the anthem.
The so-called “protest” is a carry-over from last year when San Francisco quarterback Colin Kaepernick first protested racial inequality and police brutality by refusing to stand during the national anthem. Kaepernick, you may recall, was not signed with a team for the 2017 season. Of course, most of the sheeple on the left, particularly those in the black community, believe his skin color and the systemic racism in the NFL are the reasons he was not signed on, regardless of the fact that he voluntarily opted out of his contract with the 49ers and that 70% of NFL players are…you guessed it…BLACK.
All of a sudden, NFL players seem to think becoming political is in their best interests. In 2017. When the majority of Americans have already made clear just how they feel about celebrities and sports icons shoving their political ideologies down viewers’ throats. For some reason, they believed this would – what? – help their ratings? Get them social media attention? Make stock prices for the NFL go back up after their slump in 2016? Bad move, guys. Because the exact opposite happened, and will continue to happen until you stand like the rest of us and show some damn respect.
Obviously, all of this drama has been causing a proverbial “shit storm” on Twitter the past few days, and things have only heated up now as more and more people voice their opinions on the matter.
One of the biggest arguments I’ve seen being thrown around out there is that their protest is protected speech under the first amendment. Many people are expressing disgust that Trump would defend the first amendment rights of “white supremacists” and “Nazis,” but would not do the same for the NFL players kneeling in solidarity with Kaepernick and all those who were apparent victims of police brutality and racism. They are calling conservatives hypocrites for the very same.
But here’s the thing. This isn’t a freedom of speech issue.
Yes, the NFL players are entitled to their own political opinions. Absolutely. We all are. That’s the beauty of the first amendment. The government cannot infringe on our right to have our own opinions and voice them. However, these players are NOT entitled to parade around politically protesting…WHILE THEY’RE AT WORK.
When you are working, you are to act professionally, fulfilling the requirements of your job and keeping your political opinions to yourself. I must do this as a teacher. My sister must do this as an engineer. My mother and father, as business owners, must do the same. When you go to a car dealer, do you really care what the salesman thinks about politics, or do you merely want him to help you decide which car you should buy? When you go to the dentist, do you pay him money to hear what he has to say about racism, or do you pay him to fix your teeth for you?
This is the SAME THING.
NFL players have been fined for dancing in the end zone before. Know why? Because it’s unprofessional. And just as much, if not more so, is kneeling during the national anthem with the sole aim of making a political statement against the President and against the “systemic racism” that forms the backbone of America.
Give me a break. How many of us would still have our jobs the next day if we shoved our political opinions in our customers’ faces?
But leftists are willing to give NFL players a Get Out of Jail Free card…why?
This has nothing to do with freedom speech. If anything, it has to do with common decency and respect. For America’s flag. For America’s national anthem. For America itself, for the glorious country that allows these football players to make millions of dollars and subsequently stomp all over those who fought and died for their right to act like idiots and lose nearly half their viewership.
They deliberately chose to protest the anthem of the country that protects their asinine abuse of “freedom of speech.” They deliberately chose to spit in the faces of the men and women who die every day risking their lives to preserve their rights under our Constitution. They deliberately chose to feed a monster that now only exists in the delusions of liberals, that little bugger they like to call “systemic racism.” All while they were being paid. By us.
