After Berkeley, the media narrative on Antifa began to shift a teensy bit. Politicians and thought leaders on the Left are now starting to call out violence of these thugs. The Democrats decided to climb to moral ground, distancing themselves from their shock troops.
Nancy Pelosi stated, “Our democracy has no room for inciting violence or endangering the public, no matter the ideology of those who commit such acts.” Well, that only took like fifteen months!
Pelosi went on to say, “The violent actions of people calling themselves antifa [sic] in Berkeley this weekend deserve unequivocal condemnation, and the perpetrators should be arrested and prosecuted.”
The subtext suggests democrats now view Antifa as a threat, a threat to the Democrats!
Consider this rush to denounce Antifa is an attempt to avoid collateral damage. There are many leftist groups the DNC are pleased to ally with. Clearly, the Antifa “brand” is now damaged goods and Dems are cutting them loose.
But I caution you to avoid taking this as a sea change, more of a course correction. You’ll notice the media will fall in line as the term counter protestors will now be disappeared down the memory hole.
At the same time don’t expect the Left to drop its claim that Trump after Charlottesville sided with Nazis. Trump didn’t side with Nazis. What we’ll see these following days is a narrative brimming with pithy “we condemn Antifa violence” moral preening, now that it’s de rigueur.
Essentially the legacy-media have been stirring for months for outright civil war. And you can’t ever root for Nazis, thus they’ve been covering for Antifa. Take CNN, please. It’s enough to suggest a majority of journalists and their employers agree on the same things.
We’ve seen enough of this diversity to know it literally endangers people wearing certain ball caps! And no, a city square bathed in tear gas is not the road to cultural enrichment. A street beat down is assault by criminal thugs.
Now, pull back the camera for a wide perspective. At the fringes of the alt-left and alt-right the hardcore elements are two sides of the same coin: Ideological extremists. Both factions seek authoritarian rule controlled by an unelected elite. Think Stalin, Mao, and Hitler.
There are many offshoots among radicals both Left and Right. Antifa is but one disruptive force among many such armies. Given some time out of the spotlight Antifa could rebrand or be absorbed among the variant faction of street-terrorists.
On the plus side, I’d suggest, there exists a relatively small membership on both sides. For now the DNC has decided to walk back their tacit support of Antifa. Perhaps the climate will chill somewhat, then maybe not.
