Germany Opens Its First Gay-Friendly Mosque and the Muslim Community is Not Happy About It

Gay Muslim marching from

During the early 1990s, many Christian churches had policies in inviting non-Christians. The policy was to not invite homosexuals. There were some churches that were gay friendly but most had strict rules such as no gays, lesbians or transexuals at the house of God.

But it is a new era. There are very few or none of those strict rules and doctrines in churches today. Although of course there are churches where they preach about homosexuality being a sin, most pastors believe anyone with a different orientation or identity is still a child of God and can attend sermons because only God can judge.

But it seems difficult for the “religion of peace” to be tolerant of the LGBT community in their mosques. Last week, Germany opened its first “liberal mosque” inside a Protestant church in Berlin. The organizer Seyran Ates, who moved from Turkey to Germany, is a peaceful activist and feminist. Will this big move impress social justice warriors and progressives?

Niqabs and burkas will also be banned in this liberal mosque. The organizers there have stated that they are a “political statement” and “have nothing to do with religion.”

Ates also hopes she can reach more conservative Muslims. However, she said the feedback has not been pleasant. She has received some “very violent and obscene” threats which then prompted to request police protection at the mosque’s Friday opening.

The Muslim community on social media expressed the same feelings.

Here in the West, liberals love to defend Muslims and their values. Many Muslims want to push their more conservative values that seem to not be tolerant in any way towards the LGBT community.  It does not seem like they want to be progressive and change the status quo.

As a Christian, I am taught to love someone despite their values and beliefs. From time, Christianity has had to evolve into learning more on Christ’s teachings. Now I don’t know what Prophet Muhammad taught to his followers in regards to gays, but I certainly do believe his followers need to stop living in The Dark Ages.
